The modern name Athlone comes from the Irish Ath-Luain the ford of Luain. Luain was a guide to travellers who wished to cross the waters of the Mighty Shannon. Historically Athlone was an important strategic crossing point of the river Shannon, this was the basis for many battles throughout the history of Athlone, including the famous Seige of Athlone in 1691.
Today Athlone straddles the mighty Shannon and its landscape is still dominated by Athlone Castle and the bridge over the river. Leisure craft and cruise boats are an ever-present feature of Athlone River life. Athlone is characterised by its busy town with a bustling nightlife and abundant shopping. The new Athlone Town Centre development with over 70 retail outlets, opened in 2008 has brought Ireland's newest shopping experience to the Midlands.
